How do I use the Audiogon Condition Scale?

How do I post a classified ad?

You must first register a Username and password before you can list classifieds. To register a Username, start here:

https://audiogon.herokuapp.com/users/sign_in

After you have registered, follow the link "Post a Classified" on our home page under Sellers. You may access that link directly at:

http://audiogon.herokuapp.com/new_listing/details?type=classified

Remember that you must list only one item per ad. Doing this will insure that you will receive better search results as well as placement in the proper category. Ads with more than one item will be removed by Audiogon staff without credit to your account.  Make sure you follow our listing guidelines.  http://support.audiogon.com/customer/portal/articles/1035913-listing-guidelines

How do I add a link to my ad?

Basic listings are no longer able to add links to their ads. Premium listings may include links to product information, but cannot include links to other items for sale, or offsite advertising for other information.

The allowed HTML tags are:  <p>, <br>, <a>, <strong>, <em>, <b>, <i>, <u>, <ul>, <ol>, <li>

How do I cancel my ad?

You may manage all of your activities through your "Dashboard", which is linked from our home page towards the right.

Once logged in, you will see links to all of your activities. Active Classifieds/Wanted's may be edited or cancelled at anytime. Auctions however, may not be edited, but you may add comments to the initial description you entered.

To edit a classified for example:
Go to Dashboard > Active Classifieds.
Click on an ad title.
Look for the link "Delete this ad".

How do I edit my ad?

You may manage all of your activities through your "Dashboard", which is linked on our home page towards the right.

Modification of an ad may be done any time that you do not have active offers or counteroffers, or in the case of an auction, anytime you have not received bids yet. To edit, simply go to your Dashboard, under Selling, select the ad you would like to modify. At the top of the listing page on the righthand side, you will see an "Actions Menu." This will present you with a number of options including changing the status of your ad or canceling the ad. From here click on "Edit Listing".

How do I load pictures into my ad?

Pictures can be easily uploaded while creating your listing, you can either select upload a photo, or select from my image library.

When posting an ad (or editing it later), you will see a field that asks "Upload Pictures?". Under that field you need to
Note: Upload problems may occur if you are using Norton Internet Security. If you are using this program, you will have to disengage the program to upload pictures. When uploading is finished, re-engage your program.

TIPS:

Take full shots of the both the front and the back. Take each picture from several slightly different angles, and pick the one with least glare. Use flash for the back panel, and no flash for the front panel.

Take closeups of key features. Try to include multiple pictures of the controls, and the connection panels. Let the buyer see exactly what they will see when they buy your item.

Take pictures of the box and accessories. The condition of the box for example, tells the buyer a lot about the item.

Keep your picture size to 600 pixels wide by 450 pixels tall, or smaller. Our system will shrink pictures that are any bigger anyway. You will get better results if you set your camera to take pictures of approximately that size in the first place.

Keep your file size to 100k or less. For any file on your computer, you may find out how much space it is taking by using the "Get Info" option for that file (right click on it). If the file is much bigger than 100k, it will take a long time to upload, especially if you are using dial-up and a long time for your buyers to down-load and see it. If your picture files are too big in file-size, you should use a graphics program to "compress" them.

Use _lots_ of light. Digital cameras like to have a lot of light, and flash is not good for shooting electronics. Sunlight is by the far the best type of lighting. In general, the more light the better.

Consider the background. Whatever is behind your item should be darker than the item itself, or the camera will darken the item. The background should be bland, with few colors and not much contrast.

How do I mark an item sold?

You manage all of your activties through your "Dashboard", which has a link on our home page towards the right.

Once logged in, you see links to all of your activities. Active Classifieds/Wanteds may be edited or cancelled at anytime. Auctions however, may not be edited, but you may add comments to the initial description you had entered.

To edit a classified for example:

-Go to Dashboard > Active Classifieds.
-Click on an ad title.
-You will see "Mark it Sold" under the drop down actions tab.

How do I sell multiple items?

Audiogon listings are intended for one buyer only. What this means is that if you have more than one item you'd like to sell together as a set you may do so with one ad. For example, selling a turntable with a tonearm together for one price would only require a single listing. However, if the intent is for these items to be sold separately to different users, they will need to be listed in different ads.

There is, however, an exception for low dollar items (such as LPs, Tubes, etc.) which can have up to four distinct items per listing.

How do I upgrade my ad to feature or bold?

When posting an ad, you will see checkboxes to choose upgrades. Listings can be upgraded after it is live. Simply click the upgrade button and you can add on either bold or featured.

However, if you cancel an ad within 1 hour of being posted, the system will automatically refund the listing fee. Thus, for example, you could place another ad with the chosen upgrades, and then delete the first ad. Please note that unless you do this within one hour of having posted the first ad, the listing fee still applies.

How long do classified ads last?

Classified ads are displayed for a full 30 days. During this time, you may find all of your ads listed under "Active Classifieds" in your Dashboard. As classified ads expire, you are sent an email notification. Expired ads are stored in your Dashboard for an additional 14 days for your convenience in relisting an item.

How long do featured ads last?

Featured ads are prominently displayed in two areas: NewToday, and the specific category of your item. Your featured ad will be displayed on the NewToday page for exactly 24 hours from when it is submitted. It is also displayed on the first page of its category; (30 days for classifieds, 3-14 days for auctions).

Why did my bold title disappear?

If you change Categories after posting your ad, the Bold title or Featured Status might get lost. If this happens, please let us know and we will transfer the upgrade options for you. Please send us an email with the following information:

Time of change:

Why does my title get changed?

Our system employs a variety of methods to keep titles readable and consistent. The longer the title of your ad (Brand + Model + Rest of title), the more modifications are employed. For example, some people try to use all caps throughout the three fields, filling each field with as many characters as allowed. This will cause the system to change everything to lower case.

Some characters are not allowed at all because they create problems with the HTML code that defines a page for your browser. Slashes for example, confuse computers because they usually designate a folder or a "path" on a hard drive. Other characters may affect browsers in various ways. Thus, we must filter out these troublesome characters at the time of submission.

During the placement of an ad, you should check the Preview mode. The title is displayed exactly as it will appear once you approve the preview. Thus, you can go back and forth between Preview and Edit modes until the title appears as you intended.

Some specific examples:

If you want the brand "ABC" to appear in all titles, then do not enter anything else in the Brand field of the form. If you enter "ABC modelX" in the Brand field, the system might change it to "Abc Modelx".

If you want to use an attention getting word like "REDUCED" in the ShortDescription field, then just make sure your title is not lengthy. The longer your title, the more modifications are induced by the system.

In general, if you enter only a company name in the Brand field, and only a model number in the Model field, the system should not modify those fields. Use the ShortDescription field (the third part of the title) to enter any descriptive words.

Our website is designed to not "yell" at readers. Ad titles that use numerous extraneous characters or ALL CAPS are essentially yelling (if allowed, then everyone would want to yell). If you want to upgrade your ad's prominence dramatically, then choose a Bold or Featured ad option. Our goal is to provide visitors with a clean, consistent layout, no matter what browser or computer they are using. This in turn necessitates certain limitations to ad titles.

Why isn't my bolded ad in bold in a search?

The Search Results page is purposely void of all upgrades and graphics, to present a clean, rapid display to users searching for specific products. Clearly, anyone searching for your ad will already be interested in viewing your ad if it appears in the search results. The Bold and Featured options are more effective for getting the attention of users that are "Browsing" the site, such as when viewing the NewToday page, or any of the item categories from our home page. Thus, your Bolded or Featured ad will appear with the upgrades in those relevant areas, but it will appear in plain font in the search results.

Why isn't my ad in the search results?

Newly posted ads (or recently edited ads) may not appear everywhere immediately, especially in the Search results. Or, they may appear as their older version for some number of hours, until various parts of the website have updated themselves. Some areas will show it instantly, while others may take up to 24 hours to appear.

In general, your Dashboard always shows everything "live", while other areas may take a few minutes to a few hours to show new/edited ads.

Why isn't my reduced price showing up?

Newly posted ads (or recently edited ads) may not appear everywhere immediately, especially in the Search results. Or, they may appear as their older version for some number of hours, until various parts of the website have updated themselves. Some areas will show it instantly, while others may take up to 24 hours to appear.

In general, your Dashboard always shows everything "live", while other areas may take a few minutes to a few hours to show new/edited ads.

How do I use the Audiogon Condition Scale?

The Audiogon Grading Scale uses a 1-10 scale for rating the physical condition of audio equipment. Each rating lists specific criteria which potential buyers will be expecting your item to meet. The definitions of the grading scale may be viewed at:
